Everyone possesses a philosophy of life, irrespective of their awareness. The development of one's philosophy occurs in distinct phases throughout life. The fundamental aspects of our philosophy are established during the initial seven years of childhood. Subsequently, another crucial period for the shaping of our mindset occurs during the mid-teenage years until our early twenties. Following this, our philosophy generally remains relatively stable. However, in later stages, it is common to engage in introspection and reconsider our philosophical beliefs.
Philosophy plays a crucial role in our subconscious thought processes, shaping each and every decision we make, ultimately redefining our life trajectory. This fundamental aspect of our existence is deeply rooted in various factors such as our cultural background, familial upbringing, religious beliefs, educational experiences, and societal norms.
A significant determinant of our philosophy is the cultural milieu we exist in, specifically the culture we were raised in. Each family possesses its distinct culture and philosophy, resulting in a degree of indoctrination for all individuals growing up within that family. Religion, in most cases, is a product of our place of birth or ancestral origins rather than a deliberate personal choice. Equally influential is the education system, shaping our philosophy and mindset to a considerable extent.
Our involvement in specific social groups further reinforces our beliefs, as these groups typically share a similar outlook on life. Consequently, being part of such a group indirectly reinforces its philosophy. Conversely, if we join a social group with divergent beliefs from our own, the dominant group philosophy tends to exert a gravitational pull, influencing our own perspective.
Materialism is inherently interconnected with our philosophical beliefs, exerting varying degrees of influence on each individual. While all humans possess some level of materialistic tendencies, certain individuals display an extreme attachment to material possessions. Notably, individuals who undergo unfavorable social circumstances during their upbringing, such as receiving disheartening treatment from parents, enduring poverty, feeling insecurity, lacking self-confidence, achieving undeserved financial or positional advancements, or even facing the looming possibility of death, tend to exhibit heightened materialistic inclinations.
A materialistic individual is someone who is excessively focused on acquiring material possessions, particularly goods and wealth, and associates them with happiness and fulfillment. The desire to possess such items is primarily driven by emotional factors, such as social status and personal appearance and well-being, rather than practical considerations. The prevalence of materialism has become prominent in our society, with people increasingly attributing happiness to the accumulation of material possessions.
To put it simply, material possessions are merely symbols artificially associated with happiness. Therefore, it is advisable to amend our mindset and endeavor to attain happiness without relying solely on material possessions.
